How to start playing  Irish Lotto and check for lottery results:

Let’s begin by discussing how the Irish Lotto works.

How does Lotto work?

Lotto is a simple and exciting number-draw lottery game where players pick six numbers from 1 to 47 to match the drawn numbers.
Each draw features six main numbers plus one bonus ball, creating multiple winning opportunities across prize tiers.
The minimum entry requires two panels (lines) per draw at a total cost of €4, with extra panels available for just €2 each to boost your chances.

Ways to Play Lotto

There are three convenient methods to start playing Lotto and enter the draws.

1. Manual Number Selection

Choose your own lucky numbers by marking six numbers from 1 to 47 on the play slip for each panel.
This hands-on approach lets you use birthdays, anniversaries, or personal favorites, giving you full control over your Lotto ticket.
Fill out as many panels as you like before submitting at an authorized retailer.

2. Quick Pick Random Selection

Opt for Quick Pick to let the system generate random numbers automatically for your panels.
Request it directly from your Irish National Lottery agent, or simply tick the Quick Pick box on the play slip.
This no-fuss option is perfect for players who prefer leaving number choice to chance, ensuring unbiased random Lotto numbers.

3. Online Lotto Play

Sign up and play Lotto online through the official lottery.ie platform or app for anytime access.
Buy Lotto tickets online, select numbers or Quick Pick, and confirm entries from home—no need to visit a store.
Online players enjoy secure purchases, instant confirmations, and easy prize claims for winnings.

Lotto Plus: Free Bonus Draws

Standard Lotto tickets automatically enter you into Lotto Plus special draws at no extra cost.
These bonus raffles offer fixed prizes typically between €8,000 and €12,000 per winner, shared among entrants.
No additional action required—just play regular Lotto on an announced draw date to qualify automatically.
Lotto Plus enhances value by multiplying your entries into extra winning chances without raising the Lotto ticket price.

Lotto ticket cost

The price of a Lotto ticket depends on how many lines you decide to play.
The minimum play is two lines per draw, and this basic entry costs €4 in total.
If you want to increase your chances of winning, you can add extra lines to the same ticket at a price of €2 for each additional line.
Players can mix and match as many extra lines as they want, as long as they respect the sales cut‑off time on draw days.

Lotto jackpot and rollover rules

The Lotto jackpot starts from a minimum of €2 million and can grow from draw to draw when nobody wins the top prize.
Each time there is no jackpot winner, the jackpot rolls over and increases, funded by a portion of the prize pool from the latest draw.
This rolling mechanism continues until the jackpot either reaches the current cap or is finally won by one or more players.

Lotto jackpot cap and roll‑down

The Lotto jackpot is subject to a maximum cap: if it reaches €19.06 million, it can no longer increase beyond this amount.
Once the jackpot is at this cap and there is no jackpot winner in a given draw, any additional money in the prize fund that would normally go to the jackpot instead rolls down to the next highest prize tier where at least one winner exists.
The jackpot is allowed to remain at its capped level for up to five consecutive draws.
If, after the fifth draw at cap, the jackpot is still not won, the next draw becomes a special “Will Be Won” draw.
In a Will Be Won draw, both the capped jackpot and any surplus prize fund are guaranteed to be paid out by rolling down to the highest prize tier with at least one winning ticket, even if nobody matches all main numbers.

Lotto draw days and cut‑off times

Lotto draws take place twice a week, every Wednesday and Saturday at 7:55 p.m. local time.
Official results are usually published on the Lotto results page starting from around 9:15 p.m. on the night of the draw.
On draw days, ticket sales close precisely at 7:45 p.m. and remain suspended until the draw finishes at 7:55 p.m.
Players who want to enter the same‑day draw must complete their purchase before the 7:45 p.m. sales cut‑off.

Where to watch live Lotto draws

You can watch the live Lotto draws every Wednesday and Saturday at 7:55 p.m. on RTÉ One.
This live broadcast allows players to follow the draw in real time and immediately see the numbers as they are drawn.

Irish Lottery draw dates and Latest winning number updates:

The Irish Lotto is held every Wednesday and Saturday night, with a minimum jackpot of £1.7 million, costs £2 to play, and has great odds of winning any prize—just 1 in 29.

Irish lottery Biggest winners:

Since the game’s inception in 1988, Irish Lotto has been awarding spectacular jackpots; the largest winners have taken home multi-million-euro prizes that have reached eight digits. Find out more about the biggest Irish Lotto winners ever.

1. On Saturday, January 15th, 2022, €19 million

A single ticket won the biggest Lotto jackpot in Ireland’s history following a special “Will Be Won” draw on Saturday, January 15th, 2022. The criteria were amended to ensure a payout because the top prize hadn’t been won since June of the previous year and had been at its cap for more than three months.

If no one had matched all the numbers, the jackpot would have been divided amongst participants in the next category. Still, one fortunate player from Castlebar in Co Mayo hit the lot to break the previous record. A family syndicate claimed the money and stated that they intended to spend it on improving the lives of others in their neighborhood.

2. €18.9 million on June 28th, 2008, a Saturday

This prize was won by a syndicate of sixteen employees from the Dan Morrissey quarry and concrete company in Bennekerry, County Carlow, and it was the highest for over thirteen years. Players from all over Ireland flocked to participate in the draw, which jumped in value by over €2 million from the previous Wednesday, June 25th, to the record-breaking prize, which accumulated in less than two months from the beginning of May.

The winning team included two pairs of brothers, a father and daughter, and fifteen men and one woman. Declaring that the winnings from their €32 Quick Pick were “too much for one person,” they were happy to divide the winnings amongst them. Some syndicate members showed up for work the day after they won, even though they had each won over €1.1 million. They waited for two other members to return from vacation before stepping forward to collect the reward.

3. €16.7 million on April 14th, 2010, a Wednesday

On April 14th, 2010, there was only one winning ticket in this large draw, ending a string of rollovers that had continued for over a month. The crucial entry was subsequently discovered to be sold at Eason’s store in Dungarvan, County Waterford. The National Lottery withheld further information since the winner chose to remain anonymous. However, the store owner did confirm that the winner was an individual rather than a syndicate and that the incident ‘couldn’t have happened to a nicer person.’

Before declaring victory, the winner had contacted Pat Whyte, the store owner; he wanted some time to process the “enormity” of the news.

4. €16.3 million on Saturday, October 23rd, 2010

On October 23rd, 2010, a guy from Dublin became the 400th millionaire of the National Lottery when he matched every number. When he claimed his money, he preferred to be anonymous. However, he disclosed that he had picked his numbers and purchased his €30 Quick Pick ticket from Dublin 4’s Donnybrook Fair supermarket. He was thrilled and said, “I’m more likely to play when the jackpot is a big amount, like last weekend.” He would share the money with his family. “I don’t play Lotto every week,” he said.

5. €16.1 million on July 28th, 2007, a Saturday

At the time, the largest jackpot ever seen on Irish Lotto was won by the Cunningham family from County Cork. A few days later, the fortunate family revealed themselves by traveling by bus to the National Lottery’s Dublin headquarters. The winning ticket was a €4 Quick Pick bought at Twomey’s Centra shop in Farranree. The five children of Helen and Paul, who are parents, were present: Amy, Sarah, Paul, Stephen, and Shane. They claimed that their lives had been happy even before winning the lottery, and they were eager for things to return to normal.

Locations of Winning:

  • Since its launch in 1988, the Irish Lotto has produced large winners nationwide. Still, certain regions have proven to be lucky than others:
  • Dublin: With over 500 Lotto millionaires, Dublin has produced more jackpot winners than any other county.
  • The smallest county in Ireland, Louth, has had the highest number of Lotto winners per capita.
  • The largest lottery win in Irish history occurred in Carlow, where 16 quarry workers split €18.9 million.
